District Lakki Marwat has a population of over eight hundred thousand, more than half live below the national poverty line.

The district is ranked amongst the 25 poorest in the country. Access to basic civic amenities in poorer areas of the country is a luxury and as such in this arid district only one third of the population has access to tap water.

The vast majority of the people here have to walk long distances to collect water from extremely unhygienic ponds of rainwater, which serve the needs of both the local cattle and humans. Using this water for human consumption is extremely detrimental to health and waterborne diseases are common amongst the people.

Lack of clean drinking water is a major cause for increased infant mortality rates and outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, dysentery and diarrhea epidemics in under developed areas.

The Wadaan Foundation (previously known as the Nasr Foundation) has taken a policy decision to ensure the provision of clean drinking water to the people and works to develop an environmentally sustainable infrastructure towards the achievement of this strategic objective.
